American Airlines to retire 45 of its oldest 737s

American Airlines Group Inc. is planning to retire 45 of its oldest Boeing Co. 737 jets in the next two years as part of an overhaul that was aimed to lower the age of its workhorse narrow-body fleet.

This Fort Worth carrier was planning to withdraw 12 of the airplanes next year and 33 in 2020 or about three a month.

The oldest 737-800s of American Airlines are about 19 years old though recent deliveries have minimized the group’s average age to 8.1 years as per the annual report of the airline. American had 304 of the Boeing model at the end of last year that comprises one-third of the main jet fleet.

Josh Freed who is the spokesman of American said on Thursday that the retirement is based on the age of the aircrafts and added that they had taken back a few of them in the year 1999.

Older airplanes tend to be dependent on maintenance as compared to newer models.

Between this year and the end of 2020 American Airlines plans to add 50 Airbus SE A321 neo jets and 40 Boeing 737 Max aircraft as per a regulatory filing. The alterations are part of American’s attempts to offset deliveries of new airplanes with retirements to hold its mainline fleet at around 950 though the figure is ready to drop to 935 in 2020.

This air carrier has received 469 new airplanes ever since it merged with US Airways at the end of 2013.

It has retired the same number lowering its average fleet age to 10 from 13.

By the end of next year American would shed the last of its aging MD-80s that have an average age of 21.3 years. The carrier previously had as many as 375 of the planes that had once made up majority of its fleet.
