A research group urged the European Union to abandon an emission offsetting scheme for airlines and tax aviation similar for the ones done for other types of transport.

According to the data the sector’s emission’s growth outpaced other carbon-emitting industries.

The European Commission data earlier this week revealed that Ryanair was the first airline to land in Europe’s to grab position among the top ten biggest polluters.

So far the list was exclusively made up for coal-fired power plants.

As per  Brussels-based Transport & Environment (T&E) research group’s new figures although Ryanair was the biggest polluting airline, it was far from being the fastest-growing emitter of greenhouse gases. They had 20%, 12.6% and 11.2% respectively.

In 2018 the overall emission from the aviation sector went up by 4.9 % last year as compared to a 3.9% decline for other emission-trading sector.

According to  T&E aviation’s runaway emissions was due to governments having left the sector untaxed and under-regulated in comparison to other transport.

Andrew Murphy, aviation manager at T&E stated that the national carriers and low-cost airlines all benefit from paying no fuel tax and VAT while the rest of us must pay our way.
There should be a tax on kerosene and clean fuel mandates forcing airlines to adopt zero-emission jet fuel by the governments and the EU.

In the Paris Agreement the domestic aviation emissions are covered, however the international flights accounting for 65% of the flights are not.

The UN’s aviation agency covers them and has an offsetting scheme.
There should be a close monitor on the emissions and airlines should buy emission reduction offsets to make up from other sectors for any rise in their emissions.

The European Commission mentioned that Europe has been continuously advocating global and coordinated action to address the growth of aviation emissions.

Further the commission was taking action to reduce aviation emissions in Europe and globally. This was  a top priority of the EU’s Aviation Strategy.
