In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kenya ranks as the third largest tourism economy!

At present, in Sub-Saharan Africa, Kenya is the third largest tourism economy after South Africa and Nigeria, as per records of the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife.

In a report, the ministry explained Last year, travel and tourism increased by 5.6 per cent to contribute Sh790 billion and generate 1.1 million jobs to the Kenyan economy.

This, it said defeats the average global growth of 3.9 per cent and the Sub-Saharan Africa average of 3.3 per cent respectively.

With more than two million foreign tourist arrivals, they had spent over Sh 157 billion in Kenya in 2018, accounting for more than 15 per cent of total exports. The highest inbound international markets were the USA, UK, India, China and Germany at 11, 9, 6, 4 and 4 per cent respectively.

Together with domestic spending, travel and tourism helped 8.8 per cent of the GDP of the country in 2018, a rise from about 3.7 per cent in 2017.

The ministry explained that close partnership with private and institutional investors, conservation and regional development agencies has  made sure the financial potential of the sector is carefully and sustainably managed.

Under the banner ‘Kenyans for wildlife and wildlife for Kenyans’, the ministry mentioned that it is aimed on improving and modernizing the country’s wildlife conservation sector.

“Travel and tourism is a sector which has proven to drive economic growth, create jobs and boost social inclusion,” president and CEO of World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), Gloria Guevara said.
