Cyclone Oma: Surfers Paradise Beach and Nobby Beach closed as storm intensifies
Dangerous surf warnings have been issued for stretches of the Australia’s Queensland coast as cyclone Oma threatens to smash the coastal region. Some parts of Queensland are bracing for erosion also.
The high tides and big swells have already hit the south-east coast, and coastal activities will become increasingly dangerous. Rock fishing, boating and swimming are being discourage, with areas south of Seventeen Seventy affected by tomorrow afternoon.
Surfers Paradise beach has been closed because of strong currents and people are being urged not to enter the water. Rain and winds are expected to impact the coast from the Gold Coast north to Fraser Island. The Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has warned the Gold Coast’s beaches may be slammed by the cyclone, but noted the Council is “well prepared” as swells come in. Now, all the Gold Coast beaches have now been reopened except Elkhorn Avenue in Surfers Paradise and Nobby Beach.
Violent Storm Oma was upgraded to Category 3 over the weekend, as winds of 110km/h gusted as high as 140km/h and lashed Vanuatu. It is currently sitting 1600km north-east of Brisbane as a category two – and already enhancing the swell, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Queensland forecaster Lachlan Stoney said that they are expecting dangerous surf conditions to get worse from Wednesday and peaking Friday through to Sunday. “There’s potential for some dangerous surf conditions and potentially, even coastal erosion.”
After a weekend of hot sun, Sydney and the NSW coast is in for more warm weather today while temperatures will ratchet up inland too. However, a storm is likely tomorrow and rain is forecast for the next few days.
Victoria should see regular autumnal temperatures, although things should heat up again at the weekend, with a dip into the low-30s. Similarly, Adelaide is enjoyng a cooler patch with temperatures peaking at 24-25 degrees for the next few days, but it will heat up into the mid to high 0s come the weekend.
Perth should see a high of 32 today, 34 tomorrow, before it cools down a fraction to the mid-20s, while Darwin will hover around the mid-30s.
