From January 1 onwards the popular UNESCO World Heritage site Machu Picchu in Peru has introduced strict time slots. Visitors need to select specific time slots and should arrive within one hour or else they might be turned away.

Travellers who book for a 10 am time slot should arrive before 11 am along with this there is a strict four-hour time for each visit and the tourists should be out by 5:30 pm.

In 2017 the Incan citadel in the Peruvian Andes first introduced the ticketing, this was done after an increasing number of tourists urged UNESCO to threaten to put the attraction on its list of world heritage sites in danger.

There was an average of 5,000 visitors a day in summer which was twice the number suggested by UNESCO.

On July 1, 2017 new rules were launched that specified that visitors could only enter Machu Picchu with an official tour guide and tickets pertaining to a specific time period which was either morning (6am-12pm) or afternoon (12-5.30pm).

After the ticketing was first introduced the entry price has risen steeply, from £36 per adult to around £54.

Visitors were asked to follow defined routes around the site rather than having a freewheeling experience, while the group size was limited to 16 people.

Visitors need to be more organized as per the new system and have to choose a specific time slot choosing from an early morning (hourly between 6-9am), morning (hourly between 9am-12pm) or afternoon (hourly from 12-3pm) time slot.

Booking should be done in advance and tickets and entry times once purchased cannot be changed. One can book the tickets through an official Machu Picchu website, a tour operator or the site’s office in Cusco.

The Unesco’s list of World Heritage in danger includes 54 cities currently , Vienna’s historic centre, Kosovo’s medieval monuments and six areas in the historic centre and docklands of Liverpool.
