Japan Starts Collecting Departure Tax from Tourists

Visitors to Japan will have to pay a 1,000 yen (approx. 8€ or US$9.25) when leaving the country starting from Monday, January 7, 2019.
Japan will start collecting the 1,000 yen departure tax and the new tax will apply to both Japanese and foreign travelers leaving the country by plane or ship.
Toddlers under the age of two and transit passengers leaving Japan within 24 hours of arrival will be exempted.

The Japanese government plans to utilize the revenue from the tax for measures to accommodate more foreign visitors to the country, develop tourism bases and improve immigration procedures.
The revenue from the tax is estimated to hit 6 billion yen in the 2018 fiscal year to March this year, and 50 billion yen in the 2019 fiscal year.
