UNITED STATES - CitiesBeautiful.org is a website dedicated to providing people everywhere a broadened and deeper understanding of civic beauty. CitiesBeautiful.org recently surveyed people from around the world on their choices of the most beautiful cities, from among 25 cities on 6 continents. The survey respondents were also asked their basic demographic profile - gender, age, education, language spoken, number of countries visited, and so on, for a total of 12 demographic characteristics.

Concerning gender, the differences in the opinions of men compared to women were statistically significant. To cite a few examples:

• Cities much more frequently named beautiful by women than by men included Prague, Budapest, Sydney and Vancouver.
• On the other hand, cities much more frequently named beautiful by men than by women included Chicago, Athens, Hong Kong, and Fez.
• San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, Kyoto and Jerusalem were cities named in approximately equal numbers by women and men.

Statistically significant differences also arose among several of the other 11 demographic traits investigated, some of them surprising and all of them interesting. For example, statistically significant differences arise between the beautiful city choices of English speakers and Spanish speakers.

The results have important implications for the travel industry, government agencies that promote tourism, and various other disciplines - city planning, architecture, behavioral science, and so on.
