Trending long-haul Christmas destinations for UK travellers – research released at WTM London

Research undertaken by ForwardKeys was released at World Travel Market London 2018, giving insight into the long-haul holiday plans of the U.K. travellers.

The top trending long-haul destination for U.K. travellers is Miami recording a +39.6 per cent increase in booking as compared to 2017. Other destinations include Mumbai (+36.3 per cent), Cancun (+22.3 per cent), Dubai  (+14.4 per cent) and Orlando (+14.3 per cent).

The number of international flight arrivals in the USA decreased by 1.5 per cent between the period Feb 2017 to Sep 2018 while the global average recorded an increase of 4.0 per cent. However, Christmas can reverse the trend for the U.S. as some of the top trending destinations are from the U.S.

The research highlights the trend for ‘hot Christmas’ destinations as the top five destinations enjoy long periods of sunshine.

ForwardKeys analysed 17 million booking transactions a day. The U.S. is popular for both the ‘white Christmas’ and the ‘hot Christmas’.  While New York is the most popular ‘white Christmas’ destination, Orlando’s theme parks and Miami’s beaches are ideal ‘hot Christmas’ destinations.

Bookings were made by 29th September 2018 for a departure during 21-27 December 2018, compared with 22-28 December 2017.

Paul Nelson, WTM Portfolio Press & PR Manager, said: “Heading to far-away climes for a festive break is an increasingly popular option for Brits. Indeed, an estimated 4.5 million jetted away over the Yuletide season last year. With just seven weeks to go until Christmas, it looks like being another bumper year for the travel industry as we fly off to sizzle in the sunshine.”
