Ultra-Luxury Line Announces Three New Ships

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Silversea Cruises has announced agreements to build three new ships for the ultra-luxury and expedition line that recently joined the Royal Caribbean family.

Silversea signed a memorandum with Meyer Werft shipbuilder to build two new vessels in a new “Evolution Class,” the first of which is expected in 2022. They also signed a contract with Dutch shipbuilder Shipyard De Hoop for a new expedition ship named Silver Origin. The vessel, expected to be delivered in 2020, will serve the Galapagos Islands itinerary that’s currently being sailed by Silver Galapagos.

“We are excited to get to work helping Silversea grow and realize its ambitions,” said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., which finalized its two-thirds acquisition of Silversea earlier this year. “There is tremendous potential in the ultra-luxury and expedition markets of the cruise industry, and we believe discerning travelers will embrace the exciting designs Silversea is imagining for them.”

The agreements are still subject to various contingencies, but are expected to be set in stone by early 2019.
