Paris’s city centre to go car-free first Sunday of every month

From October 7^th onwards Paris will ban cars in city centre one Sunday a month to improve air quality and provide public spaces more fairly as a part of French capital’s Paris Respire initiative.

The move is spearheaded Mayor Anne Hidalgo and is already operative in several parts of the city.

Pedestrians, bikers , scooters and rollerblades will be permitted into the city centre from 10 am to 6 pm. Although there will be restrictions to enter and leave designated access points for local residents , delivery vehicles, public transport, taxis and VTCs. Vehicles will have to limit their speed to 20 km/h.

Those attending religious service in the city, repairmen, carers will be permitted to use their cars.

Mayor Hidalgo stated that the measure was eagerly awaited by the inhabitants and could materialize to collaboration between police, mayors of the district and neighbourhood associations.

The deputy mayor of Paris, Christophe Najdovski that it be covering most of the streets and left major roads like the as Boulevard Sébastopol.

She further mentioned that most of the world’s big cities have been developing clean mobility and are boosting air quality by cutting down on the number of cars on the roads.

Apart from improving public transport, making it more extensive, regular and comfortable, the fares system should also be considered.

The move is expected to affect taxpayer as per the head of the regional transport authority.
