Jamaica Hoteliers Endorse Tourism Certification

William Vassell, general manager at the CocoLaPalm Resort in Negril, Westmoreland, makes his point during an interview on his assessment of the Ministry of Tourism’s Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation programme.
A call has been designed for Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett along with other industry stakeholders behind the Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation (JCTI) certification project to expand the programme to the a large number of entry-level and line staff used in the sector islandwide.
The programme, that is the brainchild of the Ministry of Tourism, recently undertook a pilot project that included 150 students and some employees who worked in 12 hotels. It had been conducted by international and local certifying organizations, which provided recognized industry certification globally.
William Vassell, general vice-president and manager of operations at the CocoLaPalm Resort in Negril, Westmoreland, is contacting the JCTI to widen the certification cohort to add every certain section of the industry, which is lacking certified staff.
In his assessment, Vassell expressed the view that the JCTI training/certification project must have been implemented a decade ago but said that this is a welcome change to the hospitality sector and that many people are happy with its implementation.
“It really is seen by us as an extremely useful venture,” he said, adding that five of his employees participated in the programme and performed exceptionally well, continuing to excel within their daily work.
Vassell also said that the participants have made an extraordinary improvement with time management, along with their organizational and personal skills. Another positive sign Vassell said he’s got noticed is these recently certified workers are sharing their newly learned skills and knowledge making use of their colleagues.
“Over the full years, through the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) and the Negril Chamber of Commerce, we’ve always made representations to the relevant government agencies to implement external training and certification programmes over the industry,” Vassell said.
And now, having an industry-specific certification programme off the bottom, Vassell is confident it’ll bring about economic growth because the sector could have a far more efficient and professional workforce.
Part of CocoLaPalm’s mandate would be to encourage and engage its staff in training opportunities with organisations including the Western Hospitality Institute, and Vassell says more of these could become subjected to future JCTI certification programmes. In accordance with Vassell, that is an initiative he would unhesitatingly recommend regionally over the industry locally and. Reflecting on the tourism industry generally, Vassell describes it as an excellent sector that he has a lot of appreciation and love.
“The decision has been had by me of surviving in america, and I really do have that option still. However, i am here, making Jamaica my home. I’ll donate to my people&rsquo always;s development, in adition to that of my country.”
