Cuba expects an increase in tourists

Cuba hopes to see an increase in foreign visitors despite the deteriorating ties with the United States and the tourism industry is bracing itself for the year-end high season.

Due to travel restriction reimposed by the administration of U.S. President  Donald Trump,  the tourism sector massively suffered.

Travelling for Americans to Cuba was difficult after a brief period of détente during Obama’s regime which led the U.S. airlines to scale back flights to Havana and other Cuban countries.

Daniel Alonso, director of development at the Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) said that we will grow despite the tough circumstances.

There were same number of foreign visitors during the first half of 2018 indicating that 3 million international visitors travelled to the island even though there were campaigns organized and directed by the U.S  government to discourage the flow of American visitors to the country. The numbers were same as previous year.

There was a surge in the cruise ship arrivals and will be maintain the same pace, around 25 ships operated by 17 cruise lines are scheduled to sail into the Cuban harbors this season.

There was a record 4.69 million foreign visitors in 2017  which was 16.2 percent more than the year before and it is expected to have 5 million by this year.

Canada, France, Germany, Britain, Russia and Spain, as well as Mexico, Argentina and Chile in Latin America are the main Cuba’s tourism market.
