Indonesia tourism booking goes down by 26% post double earthquake

According to a research undertaken by ForwardKeys after a major earthquake in Indonesia there was a slump of 26 percent in bookings to the destination.

More than 20 people were killed and over 400 injured when an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale rocked the island of Lombok on July 29.

 

After nine days a more severe earthquake measuring 6.9 struck the island again that killed 555 people and injured more than 1,400. So far 156,000 people were displaced. From January on the equivalent periods in 2017 the bookings were up by 10 percent before the land was hit by the shocking earthquake.

The growth halted after the first quake and post the second fell by 26 percent. The country’s top tourist destination, Bali was worst affected and has fallen much further as considered to bookings to Indonesia.

The bookings for Bali were 15.2 % up from January 1 until the first earthquake and after the second it went down by 42.9 percent. Tourism accounts for ten percent of the total employment in Indonesia as per the World Travel & Tourism Council. However, in regards to tourism hot spots Bali and Lombok were considerably higher.

Jakarta, Indoneasia’s capital, fared better with bookings down by 2.2 per cent Olivier Jager, chief executive, ForwardKeys mentioned that one can feel sympathy for Indonesia and the people of Lombok. After the natural disaster it doesn’t come as a surprise that there will be depreciation in the travel bookings.
