Turkey travel advice released by Foreign office ahead of elections

Ahead of Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections this month the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has refreshed its travel advice.

The election will be conducted on June 24 at a time when the number of travel companies like the Jet2holidays have  reported a strong growth demand for capacity in the eastern Mediterranean.

The snap election was called by President Recep Erdogan back in April.

Turkey’s major cities will be having rallies and demonstrations as per the FCO and the travellers and advised to avoid large gatherings. They have been asked to follow the advice of the local authorities.

All travel to Turkey’s southeastern border with Syria and against all essential travel to Sirnak, Mardin, Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Hatay, Siirt, Tunceli and Hakkari should be considered advised FCO.

Antalya, Bodrum and Izmir regions are will remain unaffected but  passengers have been warned to potentially expect additional security measures while boarding flights to and from Turkey.

The FCO warns of a possible terror attack and it is likely to target the Turkish state, civilians and civil demonstrations.

It was further stated that the ‘western interests and tourists from western countries’ will be a potential target.

In the recent past the Turkish authorities could successfully disrupt  attack planning and the security was tightened in response to recent attacks.
