Sustainable tourism – a much needed global practice
Tourism businesses around the world are facing threats – from over-tourism to water shortages. Destinations are faced with the challenge that welcoming visitors at some point might longer be an option, unless, of course, sustainable tourism principles are applied.
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), sustainable tourism is “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities”.
The current drought situation being faced in Cape Town has been termed a “once in 400 years event” that has threatened to cause the unthinkable – a world-class tourism destination running out of water.
The city’s local government has urged the citizens to reduce water usage, or they would be at risk of running out of drinking water.
In the space of a little over a year, locals managed to cut down water usage.
It is quite natural that a crisis of this scale will reach the eyes and ears of potential visitors, who questioned whether they’d have water if they choose to visit Cape Town.
This indeed has effect has affected tourism professionals: hoteliers, tour organizers, shuttle operators and anyone associated with tourism business.
