Italian air traffic control strikes, hundreds of flights cancelled across UK

Ahead of a strike by air-traffic controllers and ground staff more than 100 flights have between the UK and the Italy have been grounded.

The British Airways commented that they will be using larger aircraft whenever possible to help the effected customers as more than 20,000 passengers have their journeys cancelled.

In protest against the privatization plans the controllers walked out between 10 am and 6 pm (Italian time). But during the same time across the country a wider series of stoppages occurred and the ground staff were engaged in a long-running pay dispute.

It is expected that many short-haul departures will be delayed or cancelled and many intercontinental flights to and from Italy, overflights and services to and from the Italian islands remained unaffected.

Dozens of flights has been cancelled by Ryanair, known to carry a majority of passengers on flights to and from the Italian airports.

Services from Bergamo near Milan, two round trips from Stansted and one each from Bristol, East Midlands and Manchester were grounded.

It was reported that the flights were cancelled due to the arrive back when the strikes were under way.  Flights from the Ryanir’s biggest base, Stansted to Rome, Rimini and Naples and also grounded.

Around 230 European flights that included six between London City and Milan, four between Heathrow and Rome was cancelled by Alitalia.

easyJet flights from Gatwick to Italy have been cancelled and it includes tow round-trips to Rome as well as services to Naples, Bologna and  Milan.

38 flights have been cancelled by British Airways between London Airports and Italy. This includes 14 serving Milan while Rome and Venice had six BA services grounded.

The airline stated that public transport to and from the airports might get affected due to national strike. Extra time for travel plans both before and after the flights was requested.
