According to the U.S Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports the U.S airlines made $4.6 billion last year in baggage fees alone.
It represented around 184,000,000 pieces of checked luggage costing an average of $25 a bag, generating an additional profit of $400 million over 2016 for the airlines.
However, charging for checked bags is not the only way airlines generate extra money. Around $15.5 billion was made by the U.S’s 23 airlines after taxes in 2017 considering ticket sales and additional fees.
On an average domestic travellers paid $191 to change or cancel their flights according to Hopper’s data. Last changes in the reservation or cancellation contributed $2.9 billion.
Airline profit in 2017 was not any close to 2015’s that garnered $26.4 billion in net profit.
As per the bureau the low gas prices kept the operating costs of flying down.
There are other things that the agency doesn’t track although the Bureau of Transportation keeps a track of baggage fees, change fees and the profits from charter and freight trips.
