Hospitality & tourism pathway teaches student on career options

On St. Simons Island, at the midst of the lunch rush at Chick-fil-A, a class of high school students got a lesson on the ins and outs related to the food service sector.

 

Clark Drury, operator of the St. Simons Island restaurant, exchanged words with the students in terms of chain’s business practices and hospitality policies. Then, he then took every student on a tour to the corner of the restaurant and inside the kitchen as well.

 

This visit was one of the several students in Glynn Academy’s hospitality and tourism pathway have taken, and will take, this semester as they get to know more about career opportunities in one of Glynn County’s largest local industries.

 

The pathway teaches students on the way to have a career related to the hospitality and tourism sector.

 

“They start with a marketing class, so that they can understand the basics of marketing,” said Autumn Roberts, the pathway’s instructor. “Then they take two separate hospitality classes. At first, they learn just about the basics of traveling in general, and then in the second class they get into career options and management of the businesses.”

 

Also, the class lately visited a job fair for Sea Island Co. to study in terms of the career options the company provides.

 

“Of my 31 (students), 17 of them walked away with an upcoming job interview,” Roberts said. “So they were able to fill out the paperwork on site and leave it there and set that up.”

Drury has welcomed the students to Chick-fil-A for presentation and tour for the previous two years. “I’m very grateful for him allowing us to come in during this time and teach them about the pros and cons of franchising and what he looks for when he hires,” Roberts said. “And he gives them a tour of the kitchen, because they do have to learn about the back of the house and the front of the house.”
