Georgian Airways launches Tbilisi - Berlin flights

Georgian Airways will now start flying from Berlin Schönefeld to Tbilisi in Georgia.

Three times a week, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the airline will be connecting Berlin with the capital of Georgia this summer. This connection will be flown using an Embraer 190 aeroplane. The fly time will be between three and a half and four hours (depending on direction).

"We welcome Georgian Airways to Berlin Schönefeld and look forward to the new connection to Tbilisi," says Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Berlin Brandenburg GmbH. "Both family members with Georgian roots and business travellers will appreciate the new connection. Also touristically speaking, Georgia is an insider's secret and for adventure, nature and history lovers it's a real gem."

Tbilisi, geographically located in the Caucasus Mountains, is surrounded on three sides by mountains. As a result, city districts are partly located on the mountain slope, resulting in large differences in height between individual parts of the city. The Georgian name Tbilisi translates as 'hot spring'. This name stems from the hot sulphur springs which bubble up around the city and have been used by traditional bath houses since the 17th century. The eventful history of the Georgian capital city, which has belonged to various empires throughout its life, is reflected in its architecture and culture. Oriental and western buildings, influenced by Art Nouveau and socialism, share the narrow streets. A surprising variety of religious buildings also characterise the image of the old town: Directly next to each other you will find various Christian churches, a cathedral, a synagogue and a mosque, as well as the remains of an ancient temple. The new landmark of the city is the Bridge of Peace, designed by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi and opened on 6th May 2010. The covered arc-shaped pedestrian bridge connects the old town with the newly designed Rike Park near the Presidential Palace.
