Alberta, the western province in Canada noted for the mountains and the city life sees the tourism boom in recent years and for this the tourism spending by the Tourism department of Alberta has reached a record $8.5 billion in 2016.

The total amount has been spent during almost 35 million visits was up 4.7 per cent from the year before, partly driven by a rise in overseas and American tourists.

Tourism and Culture Minister Ricardo Miranda said that the strong performance of Alberta’s tourism sector in 2016 shows its resiliency and continued potential to diversify the economy, create jobs and generate investment in communities across the province.

A 2017 study by real estate firm CBRE indicated attendance at Banff, Jasper and Waterton national parks had gone up the previous year, but visits to historic sites and museums were down 12.9 per cent.

The research study predicted that the hotel occupancy rates in the province would remain at 52 per cent in 2017 and revenue per room would stay flat.

In Edmonton, the supply of lodging was expected to increase by nine per cent, far faster than the growth in demand, contributing to a drop in occupancy rates to 56 per cent from 59 per cent.
