Thai visitors to Japan ready to surge to 1 million this year

The number of tourists from Thailand to Japan is ready to portray a double-digit surge this year to top 1 million for the first time as per the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO).

The number of Thai visitors to Japan last year had increased by 9.5% from 2016 to an approximate figure of 978,100 and its growth would accelerate this year partly on account of a yearlong mourning period for the late King Bhumibol, mentioned Takuya Shiraishi who is the director of the Bangkok office of JNTO.

The second biggest economy of Southeast Asia was ranked sixth on the list of foreign tourists to Japan last year after South Korea, Hong Kong, China and the United States.

The expected faster growth in 2018 can also be attributed to the removal in October 2017 of red-flag status over the aviation safety of the country that was imposed in June 2015 by the International Civil Aviation Organisation that had prevented Thai-registered airlines from introducing more routes to Japan.

JNTO stated that the number of Thai tourists to Japan had witnessed double-digit growth for five straight years till 2016.

The number of flights by airliners between the two nations is expected to rise this year. All Nippon Airways that is the leading airline of Japan is planning to raise flights between Bangkok and Tokyo from four to five per day from 1^st June.

Japan Airlines also said that it had decided to maintain two daily flights on the same route until March 2016 since there was quite a ‘good travel demand’ after the daily service was doubled last December.

Apart from Tokyo, other destinations of Japan are also observing more popularity among Thai tourists.

Okinawa has been able to attract more Thai tourists since Japanese budget carrier Peach Aviation had inaugurated its first direct flight in February 2017 from Bangkok to Naha that is the capital of the southernmost island prefecture of the capital of Japan that contributed to the rapid growth in air traffic.

The Okinawa Convention and Visitors Bureau that is the local government’s tourism promotional body mentioned that the number of Thai tourists to the prefecture is predicted to touch 30,000 in the current fiscal year ending this month, nearly tripling from 10,200 tourists the previous year.
