The number of overnight stays had risen by a similar 8.8% to about 20 million as per its annual study that had been presented at ITB Berlin last week, along with the German Travel Industry Association (DRV).

The average ocean cruise length was stable at 8.85 nights.

This study was based on figures from 38 cruise operators and did not comprise revenue figures in contrast to previous years. Karl Pojer, CLIA Germany chairman and head of Hapag-Llyod Cruises explained that the members of the association had decided not to include revenue figures this year.

But then he indicated that that revenues of the sector had increased strongly as compared to the passenger numbers in 2017.

Pojer pointed out that the German cruise sector represents a growth market.

And the number of cruise travellers had almost tripled between 2007 and 2017. The industry expects further growth in 2018 and there are a few new ships that would offer additional capacity.

Three out of four German passengers had booked a cruise in Europe last year, primarily Northern Europe (28%), Mediterranean (26%) and nearly 11% had selected the Caribbean that is the main overseas destination.

Furthermore, cruise vacations had spread well throughout the year with every quarter that accounts for more than 20% of the total trips as portrayed by the study.

German operators were led by TUI Cruises and Aida. And as many as 1.64 million passengers last year. On the other hand international firms had 547,000 German customers on their ships.

The German ocean cruise market is increasing much faster as compared to the overall European market that rose by 2.5% to more than 6.9 million passengers last year according to the CLIA figures. The UK and Ireland market only increased by a0.5% to more than 1.95 million guests, Italy rose by 2.5% to about 770,000 passengers while Spain had witnessed a strong growth of 6.4% and overtook France in fourth place.

The river cruise market of Germany grew well in 2017 with an 8% rise to just more than 470,000 passengers, as per a separate study presented by the River Cruise association and the DRV.

The number of nights increased by 6.9% to 3.2 million.
