American Airlines and the Mayor Rahm Emanuel struck a deal for the expansion of long debated O’Hare International Airport which will cost around $8.5 billion.

In exchange, City Hall will speed up construction of three new gates American Airlines would use in the future, according to a source familiar with the deal who was not authorized to speak publicly.

This $8.5 billion dollar agreement came as the Chicago City Council on Thursday is set to begin its consideration of Emanuel’s blockbuster, eight-year O’Hare International Airport overhaul that would include a state-of-the-art global terminal, dozens of new gates and several additional concourses. This will help to boost the business travel and tourism.

Two weeks ago, American Airlines emerged in opposition to the proposal as they accused that United airlines has the secret deal with the Mayor.  At the time, American spokeswoman Leslie Scott said the airline would sign off on Emanuel’s plan if the city would accept a compromise to “re-level the playing field” by accelerating the construction of three more gates for American.

After two weeks of public acrimony, Emanuel has agreed to speed up construction of the three gates.

The deal comes after more than a year of behind-the-scenes negotiations among United Airlines, American Airlines and the city boiled over into public view as airline executives and city officials accused each other of not telling the truth about various aspects of the plan.
