British Airways expands biometric boarding technology

British Airways (BA) is making efforts to test biometric technology to speed up boarding and arrival procedures in US airports at places like New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Orlando.

This UK-based air carrier mentioned that the brand new technology makes it possible for 240 passengers to board in around 10 minutes at Florida’s Orlando International Airport (MCO), where two biometric gates have been established on one stand.

BA customers flying on the daily BA2036 flight to London Gatwick Airport can utilize the new technology.

The facial recognition technology is the result of a partnership between the airline and the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, technology partner SITA and Border Protection (CBP).

British Airways commenced biometric boarding on international flights out of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at the end of last year.

With the aid of the new technology the airline can board over 400 customers in 22 minutes minimizing the boarding time by almost half. Biometric boarding trials in LAX and Orlando already utilize BA on its domestic UK flights from its hub at London Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5.

Meanwhile, customers on selected BA flights travelling from Heathrow to Miami and New York-JFK are benefitting from a similar biometric trial upon arrival to the US, making the arrivals process easier and faster.

The new SITA technology does away with the requirement for tourists to display their boarding pass and passport at the departure gate, speeding up the boarding.

Instead customers stare into a camera before boarding, wait for their biometric data to be verified and walk onto the aircraft.

Just like facial identification built into mobile phones, the biometric e-Gates use high-definition camera technology and permit customers to pass through by recognizing their unique facial features and matching them with the passport, immigration or visa photos.

Security is at the core of biometric facial technology.

British Airways said that it had been working closely in partnership with CBP to make sure they strictly adhere to privacy rules and regulations.
