Anti tourism approach erupts in European countries with the protests. There are the tensions in different places of Europe like Spain, Barcelona, Italy and many other places showering the anti-tourism approach.

But World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has defended the sector calling the local administration management to manage the growth of the tourists in a sustainable way.

The wave of anti-tourism protests takes place in some of Europe’s most popular destinations, with the focal point- Spain. The tourism in Spain has recorded about 75.6 million tourists last year including 17.8 millions from United Kingdom.

Now the European countries need to ensure tourism, with an enriching experience for visitors and hosts a like demands strong, sustainable tourism policies.

In Barcelona the tension has risen due to the unchecked surges of the visitors and the impact of the web portal like Airbnb. The political organization of Barcelona, Arran made a violent protest against the tourists by blocking the roads and other means of disturbances. They protested by slashing the tyres of rental bicycles and a tour bus. According to them, the tourism here expels the people from their neighbourhoods and harms the environment.

There have also been the massive protests in Mallorca and San Sebastián, where an anti-tourism march is planned for 17 August, to coincide with Semana Grande – a major festival of Basque culture. There are other demonstrations, which have taken place across southern Europe.

Venice sees more than 20 million visitors’ surge a year and has just 55,000 residents – 2,000 locals marched through the city, raising the voice of anger at rising rents and the impact of huge cruise ships and the pollution they cause to the city’s delicate environment.

World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Secretary General, Taleb Rifai said that the rise of anti-tourist sentiment is very serious situation, which will give a direct impact on the economy of the country.  It needs to survive a greater way by increasing the sustainability and the responsible tourism.

Tourism in Europe is an inspiring experience for the global visitors. It hosts the strong demands for sustainable tourism policies, practices and the engagement of national as well as local governments and administrations, private sector companies, local communities and tourists themselves.

World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) suggests a number of proven methods for managing crowds in different destinations by encouraging the tourists to visit beyond the central sights, diversifying tourist activities, reducing seasonality and, importantly, addressing the needs of the local community.
